!sns 待機リストに登録しておいたT2 Socialの招待メールが今日届きました。登録して、手順を紹介したいところなんですけど、やる暇ないですね…どうするか。

上記にある通り、私自身は2023-09-16にT2の招待を受け取っており、登録確認しようとしていた最中の改名の発表でした。

2023-09-18T13:30頃から22:00頃にかけて改名作業でサイトの一時停止があったようです。 以下の投稿群でPebbleへの改名完了が告知されました。このタイミングでPebbleの公式アカウントもできたようです。

Pebbleへの改名の意図が、改名前のt2.socialのサイトのリダイレクト用画面にあります。
T2’s New Brand: “pebble.is”
T2 was always meant to be a temporary name. We thought it was too derivative and a bit uninspired.
A pebble is something small and unassuming. It can be tossed into the vast ocean like a tiny message sent out into the world. Each has its own unique character. Some are round and friendly. Some have edges to them. They make ripples that expand ever outward and change the nature of the sea itself. As they collect onshore, they create a spectacular beach where people can gather and admire the view. It’s a place we can visit and share ideas in times of joy, sadness, concern, and celebration.
When we stumbled upon the “.is” domain (the Icelandic TLD), we realized that we could make that connection with our community.

Pebble is the new name for T2.
Pebbleは日本語で「小石」の意味です。小石はメッセージの意味で、広大な海に小石を投げ込むと大きな波紋を作ります。小石が集まると、素晴らしい景色のビーチができます。喜び、悲しみ、不安、お祝いに訪れ、アイデアを共有する場所とのことです。小さな石を積み上げて、より重要なものを生み出すという意味を込めているそうです。
60以上のサービス名から検討して、最終的にpebble.isに落ち着いたそうです。改名に伴い、T2のユーザー名が https://pebble.is/[username] になりました。このドメインのpebble is [username] の並びが、何か大きなものを作るために人々が集まるというテーマを強調しています。当初、Pebble.comの取得を考えたものの、Googleが所有していたため、アイスランドのisドメインを取得したそうです。
改名に伴い、新しいロゴと、[Ideas] タブが追加されました。過去の活動から生成AIが投稿内容を提案してくれる機能のようです。

「X Challenger Pebble Thinks AI-Generated Posts Can Help Lure Users Away From Elon Musk | WIRED」に今回の発表と関連した取材があったので紹介します。
今回の改名に関わらず、Pebbleは過去数か月でX/Twitterの機能の多くを既に搭載しています。この点は、引用投稿のないMastodon、DMのないBlueskyなどの他の競合との差別化になります。他に、独自のForなどの機能もあります。
当初は招待ユーザー限定でしたが、今はX/Twitterのアカウントを利用して登録可能になりました。今年の初めに140万ドルの資金調達を完了し、従業員4名、請負業者数名で運営しています。追加の資金調達を求め、最終的には広告を掲載し、定期購読を販売予定です。
Pebbleは生成AIの自動作成の投稿を試みた最初のSNSになります。
