2023-05-18に分散SNSの新しいマネージドホスティングサービスのSpaceHostのクローズドβが始まったと告知があったので紹介します。

現在クローズドβ版で、登録者限定でサービスを開始するそうです。

こちらのSpaceHostの存在を今まで知らず、今回クローズドβということで、#SpaceHost のハッシュタグからいつ頃から始まったのか調べました。

What is it? Have a guess 😉
Because people are asking, “What is the $19 for?”
#SpaceHost fully managed Mastodon hosting.
Here’s the breakdown of the costs:
1. server – $12 per month
2. backups – $3 per month
3. support + monitoring + management + upgrades + etc. – $4 per monthYes, we’ll be charging less for certain single-user instances — but they won’t be running Mastodon.
#SpaceHost is NOT for seasoned SysAdmins who are comfortable with Linux, and have no problem fooling around with Docker.
However, it IS for people who want to run their own instances, but don’t want to spend time actively maintaining them.
The Fediverse needs new instances, and we’ve discovered that the DIY approach to instance administration is a big barrier to entry for many people.
And #SpaceHost will remove that barrier to entry!
Our goal with #SpaceHost is to have you up and running with your own Fediverse instance in 2 minutes.

When I tested it, I actually got out my stop watch to see how quickly I can accomplish this.
We want to make this quick, simple, and easy.
I didn’t even intend to talk about #SpaceHost at length today.
My whole plan was to just share a screenshot, and reveal more this week.
But with mastodon.social and mastodon.online getting DDoS’d, I kind of have to talk about the importance of people starting their instances 🤷♂️
@atomicpoet Hey all! If you didn’t notice, mastodon.social is currently down.
Which means that ~800,000 Mastodon users are currently without service… or that would be the case if Mastodon was not de-centralized!
But it is. And that means even if mastodon.social never came back online, you all would *still* have access to the Fediverse through other instances.
Personally, I want to make decentralization happen further.
Which is why @reiver and I are working on #SpaceHost.

Nevertheless, the point still stands.
Even if one popular instance goes down, Mastodon will persist because it allows for multiple instances.
In fact, this is why we need to make it as easy as possible for people to start up instances!

その後、2023-02-05にアーリーアクセス (α版？) を始めたようです。

クローズドβということで、もうじき正式公開になるようです。こちらの「Chris Trottier」を私はよく知らないのですけど、分散SNS関係の話題でよく登場するインフルエンサーのようです。
Mastodonだけじゃくていろんなソフトに対応しているのがポイントに見えます。正式公開を楽しみにします。
