We believe that a public commons is important for social media. These proposals for moderation and safety tooling have been in the works for a while, and we’re excited to share them for community discussion and feedback with you now.
Bluesky’s goal is to turn social media into a shared public commons. We don’t want to own people’s social graphs or communities. We want to be a tool that helps communities own and govern themselves.
Social media has a reputation for being emotionally chaotic.
If we’re going to succeed in creating social media as a sustainable public commons, then our moderation and safety tools need to not just be good in theory, but actually help create a better social space than what has come before.
We’re seeking discussion and feedback to develop a rough consensus around these approaches — these tools won’t be effective unless people actually use them.
